Verreaux’s Eagle (Aquila verreauxii), also known as the Black Eagle. Sightings of these magnificent raptors in the Roodekrans area date back to the early 1940s so the current female in the nest could well be the third or fourth generation since then.
The female Verreaux’s eagle is in charge of the nest and can spend up to 97% of her time. Once the eggs have hatched the male spends very little time in view of the nest as he needs to provide prey for the female and the chick.
