ol Donyo lodge is located at the Chyulu Hills stretch out to the plains of Amboseli. A spectacular location with incredible views of Mount Kilimanjaro and a bustling waterhole with wildlife frequent visitors. We capture amazing sightings of striped hyenas, spotted hyenas, lions, big tuskers, giraffe, zebra, eland, oryx, yellow baboons and secretary birds.

The animals of ol Donyo at night

There’s a lot that happens under the cover of darkness at ol Donyo. The Africam cameras are discreet at the locations, allowing us to capture incredible wild sightings without the animal knowing we’re there.

In one night, the ol Donyo waterhole can have hundreds of visitors. In this video, a large male lion drinks, followed by oryx, a crouching giraffe, and a shaggy striped hyena.

Big tusker closeup

ol Donyo is home to many tuskers, and there are only currently about 25 tuskers left in Africa. The Tsavo area holds the majority of that number, and we are blessed to have them as such frequent visitors to our live stream.

The famous ‘One Ton’ resides in this area, and visits the ol Donyo waterhole on a daily basis, showing off his majestic tusks.

Females, on average, stand 2.5 m high and weigh up to 3 tonnes. African savanna elephants have large, visible tusks (unlike asian elephants that have small ‘tushes’ that don’t often protrude like that of the African elephant); bulls grow larger and heavier tusks than females and those whose tusks reach lengths of 1.5 m or more are referred to as ‘tuskers’. Tusk length and weight is variable but the record stands at 3.5 m long with a weight of 117 kg.

How Many Animals Can you Spot?

We capture amazing sightings of striped hyenas, spotted hyenas, lions, big tuskers, giraffe, zebra, eland, oryx, yellow baboons and secretary birds.

Almost every day we can see an animal coming down to the waterhole to drink or bathe, and it’s always great to play a game of ‘which animals can you name?’ Watch the video and see how many you can name.

Lions, Giraffes and Elephants

At such a popular waterhole that ol Donyo is, there is bound to be inter species mixing, which some animals are not happy about.

Elephants are very protective over precious water sources, and often don’t like other animals coming in and taking up space.

In this video, you can see a pride of lions waiting patiently for their turn to drink. Knowing the elephants, this might be awhile.
