A warthog digging through the sand at Victoria Falls Safari lodge in Zimbabwe manages to throw sand on a lurking crocodile, the angry crocodile snaps back at the unsuspecting warthog!
A very rare sighting of a warthog and a crocodile. Warthogs would never usually just stroll over to a sleeping crocodile, but this warthog seemed incredibly curious.
The warthog slowly approaches the sleeping crocodile, shovelling dirt with their snout and flicking it towards the crocodile.
More about the warthog
The common warthog is a stocky and muscular pig found in the grasslands, savanna and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. This compact animal is unmistakable in the African bush; males weigh 60 to 150 kg while females are much smaller at 45 to 75 kg. They have grey to brown bodies that are sparsely covered in hairs, except for the long mane of hair down its back, a large sloping face and a thin long tail that ends in a black tuft. The most recognisable features of the warthog are warts that develop on their faces and their tusks. Females have a single pair of warts below their eyes while males have an additional pair above the tusks; on males these warts become large and are thought to protect the face during fights. Warthogs have two pairs of tusks, the upper pair curves upwards and are longer in males than females, while the lower pair are short and extremely sharp.
More about the crocodile
The Nile crocodile is a largest freshwater predator in Africa and the second largest extant crocodilian in the world; it is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa in areas with permanent water. Nile crocodiles do have the ability to live in saline environments, but they are rarely found in these environments and almost exclusively exist in freshwater. Adult males are between 3 and 6 m long and can weigh as much as 1000 kg. Females are 30% smaller.
Eventually, after the warthog flicks the sand a few too many times, the crocodile finally reacts, flicking its head toward the pestering warthog. The warthog takes the hint and bolts, stirring a dust storm around the chaos.
The warthog learnt a valuable lesson that day.
